A Tree on Your Own Lot
The city's trees-and-shrubs article lists no permit for removing a tree on private property. HOA covenants are a separate matter, since some subdivisions have their own rules about removing or replacing yard trees. On a development site, check the project's approvals with your builder.
A Tree in the Street Right-of-Way
Trees near the curb, between the street and your property line, can sit in the public right-of-way. Section 13-403 lets the adjoining owner remove one only after getting approval from the city's designated representative. If a tree looks like it might be in the right-of-way, we'll point it out at the estimate so you can ask the city first.
The Stump Has to Go Below Ground
Section 13-407: whenever a tree is removed from public or private property, whoever caused the removal must also take the remaining stump below the level of the surrounding ground. A removal quote covers the tree to ground level, so in Goddard plan on stump grinding as well. We grind 4–6 inches below grade in the same visit.
Clearance Over Sidewalks & Streets
Section 13-401 makes owners along a street keep branches at least 8 feet above the sidewalk and 13 feet 6 inches above the street, including right-of-way trees next to their property.
