We don't top trees: topping leaves weak regrowth and decay, and crown reduction does the same job without the damage.
Trimming or pruning? Most homeowners say “trimming,” and arborists say “pruning.” Here they are one service, and on this page we use the words interchangeably; the difference between the two words is explained just below.

What’s the Difference?
On a shade tree, mostly the word. Homeowners usually say trimming and mean the branches that are in the way; arborists say pruning and mean cuts chosen for the tree’s health and structure. At Kohnen’s it is one service: the same free assessment, the same crew, one written price, and the same cleanup.
What People Mean by Trimming
Cutting back what’s in the way: limbs over the roof or the neighbor’s fence, branches heading for the service line to the house, low limbs over the driveway, or a crown that has simply gotten too big. The goal is clearance and a tidier tree. In landscaping, “trimming” also means shearing hedges and shrubs into shape.
What Arborists Mean by Pruning
Selective cuts made for the tree itself: dead, diseased, crossing, and rubbing branches removed, a crowded crown thinned, an overgrown limb shortened back to a healthy side branch instead of topped, and structural pruning on young trees so a strong branch framework forms early. A proper pruning cut sits just outside the branch collar, where the tree seals the wound.
What you get either way: when you ask us to trim a tree, the clearance cuts are made to the same pruning standard — ANSI A300, never topping — and at the assessment Joe looks at what the tree needs as well as what’s in the way, then explains which cuts it needs and which it doesn’t. The agreed cuts go into one written price. Overgrown Trees & Branches Over the Roof
Limbs scraping the shingles, shading the whole yard, or reaching over the garage or a neighbor's fence. We shorten each limb back to a healthy side branch so the crown keeps its shape and the clearance lasts. We never top a tree to get there: why topping backfires.
Dead Limbs & Storm-Broken Hangers
Dead wood and cracked or hanging branches come out any time of year, with no need to wait for the dormant season. A broken limb already resting on the house or blocking the drive gets our 24/7 emergency tree service instead of a scheduled trim.
Low Branches Over Driveways & Sidewalks
Lower limbs that hit the truck, block the mower, or hang over the sidewalk are raised to a usable height while leaving enough live crown for the tree to stay healthy.
Branches Growing Toward Power Lines
Branches heading for the service line to your house, or hanging over the roof near it, are cleared with proper climbing and rigging. A tree already in contact with Evergy's lines has to be made safe by the utility first; once the line is cleared, we handle the rest.

Service Works
Owner Joe Kohnen, an ISA Certified Arborist, assesses the tree, plans the cuts, and works the job with the crew, so the person who decides what comes off is the person in the tree. Here is what happens from the first look to the last load of brush.
The Assessment
Before anything is cut, Joe walks the yard with you and reads the whole tree: dead and overextended limbs, crossing branches, cracks, cavities, included-bark unions, and what each limb hangs over — roof, driveway, fence, or the service line. If the trouble is in the trunk or roots, he’ll tell you it’s a removal rather than a pruning job. The assessment is free.
The Cut Plan
Each cut goes back to the trunk or a healthy side branch, never to a stub, and the plan stays within the standard limit of roughly a quarter of the live canopy in a year, less on a mature or stressed tree. Species timing is part of the plan: elective oak cuts wait for the dormant season, while dead and broken limbs can come off any time.
Reaching the Canopy
Ornamentals and young trees are usually pruned from the ground or a ladder; mature shade trees need a climber or a lift to reach the crown. Branches near the roof or the service line to the house are cleared with proper climbing and rigging.
The Cleanup
Every cut limb is chipped and hauled away, and the yard is raked clean, with no brush piles left at the curb. For large volumes, our grapple truck handles the hauling. Cleanup is part of the written price, not an add-on.

Late winter, January through March, for most species: the tree is dormant, the structure is easy to see, and disease risk is lowest. Dead, broken, and clearance limbs can be removed any time of year. The exceptions are oaks, which we don’t prune electively from April through July because of oak wilt, and heavy fall cuts, which heal slowly going into dormancy. Outside the oak wilt season. A fresh cut on an oak between April and July can let the oak wilt fungus in, so we schedule elective oak pruning for the dormant season — January through March is ideal, and late November and December also work.
