Emergency Tree Service
or Storm Cleanup?

Most storm damage doesn't need a crew at 2 a.m. — but some absolutely does. Here's how to tell which call to make.

Call 24/7 Right Now

Someone could get hurt, or more damage is about to happen.

  • A tree or large limb is on your house, garage, or vehicle
  • A broken limb is hanging over a door, walkway, or driveway
  • The trunk has a fresh split or crack and leans toward a structure
  • A fallen tree is blocking your only way in or out

If a tree is touching a power line, stay 35 feet back and call 911 and Evergy first.

Schedule Storm Cleanup

Serious, but nothing is threatening a person or structure tonight.

  • A large limb broke and fell clear of everything — the wound needs a proper cut within a day or two
  • A tree is partly uprooted but leaning away from your house (keep people out of its lean)
  • Torn bark, cracked limbs, or a lopsided canopy that needs an assessment
  • Branches and debris scattered across the yard

The Work

What Storm Damage
Cleanup Includes

One crew handles the whole job — the dangerous wood, the trees worth saving, and the mess — so you aren't coordinating three companies after a storm.

  • Hanging limb removal. Broken “hangers” caught in the canopy are roped down before they fall on their own.
  • Clean cuts on broken limbs. Ragged storm breaks are pruned back to sound wood so the tree can seal the wound.
  • Split and uprooted tree removal. Trees that can't be saved come down in controlled sections, even over a roof or fence.
  • An honest save-or-remove call. Owner Joe Kohnen is an ISA Certified Arborist and will tell you which damaged trees can recover.
  • Debris hauling. Our grapple truck loads brush, logs, and root balls straight from the pile — no bundling.
  • Insurance documentation. Photos, a written scope, and a properly coded invoice for your adjuster.
  • Stump grinding. Stumps from storm-felled trees can be ground below grade in the same visit.
  • Residential and commercial. Homes and businesses across the Wichita area, including blocked parking lots and commercial buildings.

How Storm Damage Insurance Claims Work With Us

Joe has completed specialized training in reading homeowners policies, and Kohnen's bills your insurance company directly for covered storm work. We photograph the damage, write up the scope the way adjusters need to see it, and handle the back-and-forth with your adjuster. You don't pay out of pocket for the portion your policy covers.

Here's what most homeowners don't know until they file:

  • Structural damage is the trigger. A tree that hits your house, garage, fence, or shed is generally covered. A tree that falls in open yard and damages nothing usually isn't.
  • Limits and deductibles still apply. Many policies cap tree removal at $500–$1,000 per tree, and wind/hail deductibles can be a percentage of your home's value.
  • Document before cleanup. Photograph everything before it moves. Some insurers want the adjuster to see the scene before work starts.
  • A neighbor's tree on your house goes to your insurance first, not theirs.

Wichita Storm Season

The Trees That Break First
in Wichita Storms

Spring straight-line winds and winter ice storms find the same weak spots every year. If you have one of these, have it checked before the next round of weather.

Bradford Pears

Tight, V-shaped branch unions with included bark split apart under wind and ice. Why they split.

Silver Maples

Fast growth and specific weaknesses that show up at 30–50 years old. Managing aging silver maples.

Cottonwoods

Soft wood and co-dominant stems that split in straight-line winds and ice. Cottonwoods in Wichita.

Dead & Declining Ash

Ash weakened by emerald ash borer turns brittle and drops limbs in the first strong wind. Dead tree removal.

Pricing

What Storm Cleanup
Costs in Wichita

Who pays depends on what the tree hit; the price depends on how much tree is down and how hard it is to reach. Every job gets a free, written, in-person estimate.

Tree hit a structure Billed to insurance

We bill your insurer directly for covered work. Your deductible and any per-tree limit still apply.

Fallen or split tree $300–$3,000

Typical Wichita range for a whole-tree removal, set mostly by height and what's underneath.

Stumps from the storm $100–$400

Per stump, ground below grade. Several stumps in one visit cost less per stump.

Debris-only hauling is priced by the volume of brush and the job location. Ranges are general market estimates for the Wichita area, not quotes. See our tree removal cost guide for the full breakdown.

Kohnen's did excellent work in removing a damaged mature tree next to our drive. They were careful to prevent damage to the concrete and the cleanup afterwards was excellent. I highly recommend them!

Storm Damage
Cleanup FAQ

Storm just hit? Call (316) 207-4740 — we answer 24/7.

Photograph everything first, from several angles, before anything is moved. Some policies require the adjuster to see the scene before work begins, so check with your insurer before clearing large debris. The exception is anything that's an immediate safety hazard — that gets handled right away.

When a tree damages a covered structure — your house, garage, fence, or shed — the removal is generally covered, often up to a per-tree limit of $500–$1,000. Trees that fall in open yard without hitting anything usually aren't. We bill covered work to your insurer directly.

If it damaged your house, the claim goes to your insurance first. If the tree was healthy, its fall is usually treated as an act of nature. If your neighbor knew it was dead or dangerous, your insurer may pursue them. Details in neighbor tree laws in Kansas.

Often, yes. A tree that lost a limb or two can usually recover once the breaks are pruned back cleanly. A split main trunk, a lifted root plate, or the loss of most of the crown usually means removal. Joe will give you a straight answer for each tree at the estimate.

We respond to every request the same day. True emergencies — trees on structures or blocking your only exit — go first, 24/7, with no after-hours surcharge. Cleanup work is scheduled right after.

Yes — brush, limbs, logs, trunk sections, and root balls. Our grapple truck picks up loose piles directly, so there's no bundling or stacking. We don't haul household trash, concrete, or construction materials.
